1987-88 Al Secord Toronto Maple Leafs Game Worn Jersey - Photo Match
Lot #45

This road blue knit gamer by CCM was worn by Al Secord during the 1987-88 NHL season. The Boston Bruins selected Secord in the 1st round of the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft. Secord began his NHL career with the Bruins in 1978-79 and spent parts of 3 seasons with the club that drafted him before joining the Blackhawks in 1980-81. Al next spent 7 years in Chicago, parts of two with the Maple Leafs, a partial season in Philadelphia and one final year with the Hawks before announcing his retirement. Not many players in the history of the sport have possessed the combination of ability with a sheer mean streak like Secord did. During his years with the Hawks, Secord had some staggering single season goal totals such as 54, 44 and 40. Triple digit PIMS totals were the norm with a single season career best of 303 coming in 1981-82. In fact, Secord is still the only player to net 40 goals and record 300 PIMS in a single season. Al played in 2 NHL All Star Games and netted 273 goals and amassed 2093 PIMS in 766 career regular season contests. The playoffs saw similar outputs from this power forward as Secord recorded 21 goals and 382 PIMS in 102 games of playoff action.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the alternate Captain’s “A”. The game wear on this sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, heavy inner pilling, fight abuse with stitch popping and team-sewn repair work to the front collar. A custom heavily reinforced fight strap has been added atop the original fight strap and is located between the back player numbers. Shown above are a couple of beautiful photo matches of Secord wearing this exact jersey during the 1987-88 season, prior to the addition of the “A”. The Maple Leafs actually added the “A” to Secord’s sweater prior to the start of the 1988 Stanley Cup playoffs. Secord registered the 2nd highest PIMS total of his career while wearing this gamer as he racked up 221 PIMS in his first season with the Leafs. A fantastic photo matched example, complete with a letter of honor and fight abuse, that was worn by this legendary enforcer during his brief time in Toronto.
