1986 Chris Nilan Montreal Canadiens Game Worn Jersey Steve Rooney Letter
Lot #33
This home white knit gamer by CCM was worn by Chris Nilan during the 1986 NHL season. The Montreal Canadiens selected Nilan in the 19th round of the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft. This Boston, MA native spent 3 years playing at Northeastern University prior to joining the professional ranks. What followed would be a 13-year NHL career that spanned 1979-80 thru 1991-92. The majority of it spent as a member of the Montreal Canadiens, where in the spring of 1986 Nilan won a Stanley Cup. Chris spent parts of 3 seasons with the Rangers and parts of 2 more in his native Boston before returning to Montreal for a final 17-game stint after which he retired in 1992. “Knuckles” is considered one of the NHL’s all-time great pugilists. In 688 career NHL regular season games, Nilan racked up 3088 PIMS, and is one of only 9 men in the history of the league to eclipse the 3000 PIMS mark. Not to be outdone, Nilan partook in 111 playoff games and added another 531 PIMS to his gaudy totals!

Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the “86-04” born on tag. The game wear on this vintage sweater consists of stick and slash marks, general filth, material pulls, inner pilling and a salted fight strap. Lest we not forget to mention the vast amount of blood staining that is found throughout. Accompanying this sweater is a handwritten letter signed by Nilan’s former Canadiens teammate and fellow pugilist, Steve Rooney, who discusses how tough Nilan was as well as some of the tricks of the trade and how they relate to this vintage jersey! A nice old-school Canadiens gamer that hails from the Stanley Cup Era and would make for an impressive addition to any collection of NHL tough guys.
