This home white heavy mesh gamer by CCM was worn by Dave Semenko during the 1986-87 NHL season. The Minnesota North Stars and Houston Aeros each selected Semenko in the 2nd round of their respective 1977 Entry Drafts. Dave chose to begin his career in the WHA and did so with the Edmonton Oilers after they obtained his rights from Houston. Semenko’s legend began with the Oilers where he played for parts of 10 seasons, two in the WHA and 8 in the NHL. During that time Semenko provided muscle and leadership while serving as Wayne Gretzky’s on-ice bodyguard, a badge of honor he was proud to wear. Semenko trekked to 3 consecutive Stanley Cup Finals between 1983-85 and walked away with 2 Championship Rings. He was dealt to the Hartford Whalers early on in the 1986-87 season and then ended his career the following year in Toronto. Known as one of the toughest customers around, Semenko took on all comers and was a true NHL & WHA heavyweight enforcer. Sadly, the hockey world mourned upon learning of the passing of Semenko in the summer of 2017 at just 59 years of age.
The game wear on this sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes and inner pilling while fight abuse rears its head with a heavily stretched and stitch popped reinforced collar as well as a heavily stretched fight strap. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Semenko wearing this exact jersey during the 1986-87 season. This remains the only Dave Semenko Hartford Whalers gamer we ever recall coming up for major Auction. This fight abused photo matched offering would make a tremendous addition to any serious collection of enforcers.
