Lot #342

GAMEWORNAUCTIONS.NET is pleased to bring this exciting collection of game worn enforcers and tough guys to the hobby exclusively thru our Spring 2018 Auction. These 11 NHL and minor league game worn jerseys have been held in a private collection since being purchased beginning nearly 20 years ago and have been out of hobby circulation ever since. Included in this group of legendary tough guys are some extremely difficult to find players and styles, most which are being offered at auction for the first time!

This home white heavy mesh gamer by CCM was worn by Dave Semenko during the 1986-87 NHL season. The Minnesota North Stars and Houston Aeros each selected Semenko in the 2nd round of their respective Entry Drafts. Dave chose to begin his career in the WHA and did so with the Edmonton Oilers after they obtained his rights from Houston. And so Semenko’s legend began with the Oilers with whom he played for parts of 10 seasons, 2 in the WHA and 8 in the NHL. During that time, Semenko provided muscle and leadership while serving as Wayne Gretzky’s on ice bodyguard, a badge of honor he was proud to wear. Semenko trekked to 3 consecutive Stanley Cup Finals between 1983-85 and walked away with 2 Championship Rings. He was dealt to the Hartford Whalers early on in the 1986-87 season and then he ended his career the following year in Toronto. Known as one of the toughest customers around, Semenko took on all comers and was a true NHL & WHA heavyweight enforcer. Sadly, the hockey world mourned upon learning of the passing of Semenko in the summer of 2017 at just 59 years of age.

The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes and inner pilling. Fight abuse rears its head with a heavily stretched and stitch popped reinforced collar. Shown above are some beautiful photo matches of Semenko wearing this exact jersey during the 1986-87 season. This is the only Dave Semenko Hartford Whalers gamer we ever recall seeing at Auction. After being in a private collection and out of hobby circulation for quite some time, we are pleased to offer this photo matched enforcer’s sweater to the Whalers collectors and fight fans alike.
