1986-87 Adam Oates Detroit Red Wings Game Worn Jersey - 2nd NHL Season - Photo Match
Lot #25

This road red knit gamer by CCM and Eastside was worn by Adam Oates during the 1986-87 NHL season, his sophomore year. After playing his college hockey at R.P.I., Oates made his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings in 1985-86. This playmaking Hall of Famer made a name for himself setting up some of the great snipers of the modern era. After beginning his career with Steve Yzerman’s Red Wings, Oates would team up with Brett Hull in St. Louis, Cam Neely in Boston and Peter Bondra in Washington where they found themselves in the Stanley Cup Finals. Oates went on to wrap up his career with stints in Philadelphia, Anaheim where he went to the Cup Finals for the 2nd time and lastly Edmonton before retiring in 2004. His playmaking abilities led him to the rank of 7th in career NHL assists with only Gretzky, Francis, Bourque, Messier, Coffey and Jagr ahead of him. Through his lengthy career, Adam accumulated nearly 1100 assists and better than 1400 career points which ranks him 17th all-time. Adam was a 2nd Team NHL All Star at Center and played in 5 NHL All Star games. Oates was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2012.

The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, a fight strap that has lost the battle to salt and rust, fine inner pilling and a dozen team-sewn repairs. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Oates wearing this exact jersey during the 1986-87 season. Also worthy of mention is some residue left from framing. Oates’ Detroit gamers have proven pretty elusive through the years. This is in fact the first time that we can recall one of his Red Wings sweaters being up on the Auction block. A tremendous well-worn photo matched example dating to Oates’ 2nd NHL season!
