1985-86 John Tonelli & Ed Beers Calgary Flames Game Worn Jersey - Photo Match
Lot #93

This road red knit gamer by CCM was worn by John Tonelli and Ed Beers during the 1985-86 NHL season. The New York Islanders selected Tonelli in the 2nd round of the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft. Tonelli began his career with the WHA’s Houston Aeros in 1975-76 and spent 3 seasons in the fledgling league before joining the Islanders in 1978-79. Tonelli would spend the next 8 years of his career on Long Island where he played a major role in helping the Islanders to dynasty status as they hauled in 4 straight Stanley Cups from 1980-83. A deadline deal in 1986 sent Tonelli to Calgary and proved fruitful for the winger.

A couple of months later Tonelli found himself in the Stanley Cup Finals for the 6th time in 7 years, as his Calgary Flames fell to Montreal. After 3 years in Calgary, John moved to LA where he represented the Kings for 3 seasons. He wrapped up his career with partial seasons in Chicago and Quebec. All told Tonelli spent 14 years in the NHL and another 3 in the WHA. He ended his NHL career with 325 goals to go along with 836 points in 1028 games played. The 1984-85 season saw Tonelli set career bests for goals with 42 and points with 100. Tonelli played in 2 NHL All Star Games and was twice a 2nd Team NHL All Star.

Ed Beers wore this jersey throughout the season leading up to his trade to St. Louis on February 1, 1986. The jersey was then made up for Tonelli on the day he was traded by the Islanders to the Flames on March 11, 1986 during the begining of an East Coast road trip.

The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, fine inner pilling and a handful of team-sewn repairs. Shown above are a couple of beautiful photo matches of Tonelli and Beers both wearing this exact jersey during the 1985-86 season. Tonelli’s arrival provided much needed veteran leadership to Calgary as he helped guide the Flames to their first ever Stanley Cup Finals later that spring where they fell to Patrick Roy’s Montreal Canadiens. A well-worn double photo matched offering that marked this NHL All Star’s arrival in Calgary.
