1984 Michel Goulet Team Canada Canada Cup Game Worn Jersey - Photo Match
Lot #11

This white knit gamer by CCM was worn by Michel Goulet during the 1984 Canada Cup. The Quebec Nordiques selected Goulet in the 1st round of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. Michel was part of NHL expansion, beginning his NHL career in 1979-80 following the collapse of the WHA, where his playing career had begun with the Birmingham Bulls. Goulet was among the finest Left Wingers of his generation, and in NHL history for that matter. He netted a spectacular 548 goals and 1152 points during a 15-year NHL career. Michel’s goal totals from the period of 1981-82 thru 1987-88 is an impressive read, 42, 57, 56, 55, 53, 49 and 48 respectively. He was a five-time 1st or 2nd Team NHL All Star who played in 5 NHL All Star Games. Goulet represented Team Canada during both the 1984 and 1987 Canada Cup’s while representing Team NHL during Rendezvous ’87 against the Russians. Michel’s career ended prematurely as he suffered a vicious head injury during the 1993-94 season while a member of the Chicago Blackhawks, where he played for parts of five years after leaving the Nordiques.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the born on tag that reads “84 – 07”. The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, and inner pilling. Shown above are some beautiful photo matches of Goulet wearing this exact jersey during the 1984 Canada Cup. Team Canada wore this set of white sweaters as they went to battle in an attempt at erasing the memory of their defeat to the Soviets in the 1981 Canada Cup. These white sweaters were worn during the Semi-Final overtime thriller against the Soviet Union as well as during both games against Team Sweden in the Canada Cup Finals as Team Canada once again claimed world supremacy. Goulet was magnificent throughout the tournament, playing alongside Wayne Gretzky. In 8 tournament games, Michel scored 5 goals and added 6 assists for 11 points. Team Canada’s white set of tournament jerseys feature sewn on numbers and lettering and were either exchanged with a player from Team Sweden after the championship game or taken home by the players themselves. These white jerseys have proven to be an impossible get for collectors, with this example being the first to ever surface at Major Auction. A tremendous photo matched example, worn by this Hall of Famer as Canada once again regained their status of world’s best, choice!
