1984-85 Steve Payne North Stars Game Worn Jersey
Lot #191

This item comes from the personal collection of longtime New England/Hartford/Carolina equipment man Skip Cunningham.

This home white heavy mesh gamer by CCM and Steichens was worn by Steve Payne during the 1984-85 NHL season. Payne was a 2-time NHL All Star, appearing in the game of stars in 1980 and 1985, the season in which this jersey was worn.

Payne was an adept goal scorer during his too brief NHL career. In his first 7 seasons, Steve tallied 215 goals, including 42 in 1979-80. Perhaps his finest moments came during the 1981 playoffs as he and his North Stars made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals only to fall to the Islanders dynasty.

In 19 playoff contests that season, Steve netted an impressive 17 goals and 29 points. Sewn perfectly into the collar above the CCM tag is the Steichens tagging. The game use on this heavy CCM mesh is solid consisting of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, inner pilling, un-repaired holes and more than a handful of team-sewn repairs. In addition, as seen in the photos above, there has been some repair work done to the left hem and seam above where a smattering of green board paint now exists. This is a beautiful example of a now long defunct team.
