This road green heavy mesh gamer by CCM and Steichens was worn by Paul Holmgren during the 1984-85 NHL season, the last in his professional career. This St. Paul native’s short but meaningful career began in 1975 when he played for the WHA’s Minnesota Fighting Saints. A trade later that season brought him to Philadelphia where he partook in a single game as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers. He would spend the next 8 seasons proudly wearing the Flyers orange and black as he carried the torch of the Broad Street Bullies from years past. Holmgren left the Flyers in 1984 as their all-time PIM leader. Paul spent the end of his NHL career back in the city in which it began, as a member of the Minnesota North Stars where continual shoulder problems and surgeries took their toll, thus forcing him into early retirement. Despite the injuries, Paul didn’t change his style of play racking up 84 PIMS in his 27 career games in a North Stars uniform. Holmgren played in the 1981 NHL All Star game, a year which saw him eclipse the 300 PIM mark. Holmgren is looked upon as a legendary pugilist who held his own against any and all comers during the rough and tumble years of the 1970’s and 1980’s.
This gamer is Paul’s last, worn during his final injury plagued season which saw him partake in a mere 16 contests. Paul netted 4 goals and 7 points to go along with 38 PIMs as his legendary career came to a close wearing this very sweater. The game wear consists of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired holes and inner pilling. This is a beautiful defunct green and gold gamer, which bears the ever desirable Steichens on it's hem. Holmgren game worn jerseys are rarely seen in the hobby, and reside high atop many wish lists. Holmgren is considered an icon among fight fans and Flyers fans alike which may, in part, explain the scarcity issue. This represents a rare opportunity to acquire the last ever example worn by this former bad boy.
