1984-85 Jim Schoenfeld Buffalo Sabres Game Worn Jersey
Lot #37

This road blue knit gamer by CCM was worn by Jim Schoenfeld during the 1984-85 NHL season. The Buffalo Sabres selected Schoenfeld with the 5th overall pick in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. Schoenfeld made his NHL debut with the Sabres in 1972-73 and was a mainstay on their blueline for the next decade. During that span, Schoenfeld played in two NHL All Star games, was named 2nd Team NHL All Star and served as Team Captain for the Sabres from 1974-77. Jim helped lead his team to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history in 1975 and is considered one of the most popular players to ever wear the Sabres blue and gold. Schoenfeld was later part of a blockbuster trade that occurred midway thru the 1981-82 season, sending him and Danny Gare to the Detroit Red Wings. Jim spent a year and a half in Detroit, a year with the Bruins and then returned to Buffalo for a final season in 1984-85 before announcing his retirement.

Jim became the Sabres Head Coach the following season and would up spending 10 combined seasons as the Head Coach for the Sabres, Devils, Capitals and Coyotes. In 1995, the team paid tribute to their former Captain by inducting Schoenfeld into the Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the born on date “84-07”. The game wear on this size 54 sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes and fine inner pilling. Sewn to the inner verso and showing nice use is Schoenfeld’s double cloth fight strap. The 1984-85 season marked Schoenfeld’s return to Buffalo and saw him become the first player in Sabres history to wear the player number 13; Jim’s former number 6 was firmly in the grasp of future Hall of Famer Phil Housley. To our knowledge this is just the second Schoenfeld Buffalo Sabres game worn jersey to ever appear at Major Auction, the other coming exactly five years ago in our Spring 2014 sale. A beautiful offering that sports the rare player number 13 and hails from the final year of this NHL All Star’s legendary career, choice!
