Lot #393

GAMEWORNAUCTIONS.NET is pleased to present The Chris Chelios Collection. This exciting collection of game worn jerseys, game used sticks and memorabilia comes directly from the personal collection of 3-time Norris Trophy winner and Hall of Famer Chris Chelios. Chelios personally collected these items over the course of his Hall of Fame career. Each has been in Mr. Chelios’ personal collection since leaving the ice and all are fresh to the hobby. A signed letter from Chris Chelios will accompany your purchase.

This white knit gamer by CCM was worn by Chris Chelios during the 1984-85 NHL season, his rookie year. The Montreal Canadiens selected Chelios in the 2nd round of the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. This Chicago, IL native served the Montreal franchise for 7 seasons beginning with a late season call-up in 1984. Chris won his first Norris Trophy and played in 2 Stanley Cup Finals with the Canadiens, walking away with the 1986 Stanley Cup Championship. Following the 1989-90 season, the Canadiens saw fit to deal Chelios to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Denis Savard. Chelios next led the Blackhawks into battle for 9 seasons, winning a pair of Norris Trophies and making one more trip to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Detroit Red Wings acquired Chelios from Chicago at the trade deadline in 1999. Chris spent 10 seaons playing in the Motor City where won the 2001-02 Bud Light Plus-Minus Award and the 2006-07 Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award. Chris went to 3 more Stanley Cup Finals with Detroit and walked away with 2 more Stanley Cup Rings. Chelios played one final abbreviated NHL season with the Atlanta Thrashers, where he partook in the final 7 games of his storied career.

With his NHL career officially in the books, we can reflect upon just how great it was. Chris played in 1651 games over the course of 26 NHL seasons. During that time he scored 948 points and racked up 2891 PIMS. His playoff career spanned 266 games where he added another 144 points and 423 PIMS. Chelios was a 3-time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s best defenseman. He was 5-times a 1st Team NHL All Star and twice more a 2nd Team NHL All Star. Chris partook in a resounding 11 NHL All Star Games. Chicago born, Chelios was a legendary figure for Team USA through the decades. He played in the 1984, 1987 and 1991 Canada Cups, the 1996 and 2004 World Cup of Hockey and also played in the 1984, 1998, 2002 and 2006 Olympics! In addition to serving as the Captain for Team USA, this legendary warrior also served as Team Captain for the NHL All Star Team, the Montreal Canadiens and the Chicago Blackhawks. Considered one of hockey’s all-time great leaders, Chelios was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame as a first ballot inductee with the class of 2013.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the born on date “84-10”. Despite the Canadiens typical dry cleaning efforts, the game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, plenty of board paint transfer from the Montreal Forum, un-repaired burn holes, fight abuse with a trauma-laden stitch popped and heavily stretched collar, along with heavy inner pilling. Shown above are a couple of beautiful photo matches of Chelios wearing this exact jersey during the 1984-85 season. Chelios dazzled while wearing this sweater at the Montreal Forum scoring 9 goals and adding 55 assists for 64 points in 74 games played and earning his first of 11 NHL All Star Game appearances for his efforts. In any normal year, Chelios would have been awarded the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year. This however wasn’t a normal rookie class and Chris had to settle for runner up as the award went to the Pittsburgh Penguins Mario Lemieux who defeated Chelios in the voting by a 2-1 margin. A wonderful opportunity to acquire Chris Chelios’ well-worn photo matched rookie jersey directly from The Chris Chelios Collection.
