1983-85 Sergei Kapustin CCCP Soviet National Team Game Worn Jersey 1983 World Championships Izvestia Cup - Russian and Soviet Hockey Hall of Famer - Photo Match
Lot #56

This white mesh and knit gamer by Koho was worn by Sergei Kapustin between 1983 and 1985. Kapustin was inducted into the Russian and Soviet Hall of Fame in 1975. This legendary winger played in the 1974 Summit Series, the 1976 Canada Cup, the 1976 Olympics, the 1979 Challenge Cup and the 1981 Canada Cup. He won 7 Gold Medals in the World Championships spanning 1974-83. Sergei was voted 1st team All Star in the 1978 and 1981 World Championships. Kapustin sadly passed away at 42 years of age of a heart attack in 1995.

Kapustin wore this jersey during the 1983 World Championships, a Gold Medal winning effort and Sergei’s last of 7 World Championship Golds. In the 1983 tournament, the Soviet jerseys had names applied on the back in Latin characters. A look thru the front of this jersey reveals “KAPUSTIN” applied directly to the verso in just that way. Sergei likely continued to wear this sweater during various exhibitions until sporting it for a final time during the 1985 Izvestia Tournament in Moscow. The Soviets wore a nameplate with Cyrillic characters during that tournament back home in Moscow, just as you see on this sweater! The game wear on this size XXL sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes and inner pilling. Shown above are some beautiful photo matches of Kapustin wearing this exact jersey during the 1983 World Championships, take note of the crooked player number “8” on the verso. This wonderful vintage photo matched example was worn by this legendary Russian and Soviet Hockey Hall of Famer to win Gold in the 1983 World Championships as well as other exhibitions including the 1985 Izvestia Cup!
