1983-84 Steve Penney Nova Scotia Voyageurs Game Worn Jersey - Steve Penney Letter
Lot #589

This jersey originated from the personal collection of Steve Penney and a letter from Mr. Penney will accompany your purchase.

This home white knit gamer by Maska was worn by Steve Penney during the 1983-84 AHL season. The Montreal Canadiens selected Penney in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft and he made his debut with Les Habitants in 1983-84. After a late season call-up and appearing in a mere 4 regular season contests, Penney became the man between the pipes as the Canadiens stormed through the 1984 playoffs. He appeared in 15 games and won nine of them, three by shutout while posting a 2.20 GAA. It was the New York Islanders dynasty that finally defeated the Canadiens in the Conference Finals, a mere step away from the Stanley Cup Finals. Penney was solid the following season as he started 54 games and posted 26 Wins against 18 Losses and 8 Ties while earning All Rookie honors. In a twist of fate, Patrick Roy showed up to challenge Penney for his job the next year and the rest as they say is history. While Penney was part of Roy’s Cup winning team in 1986, he was dealt to Winnipeg the following season. Unfortunately his career was never the same. After only two seasons with Winnipeg he announced his retirement.

Offered here is Penney’s gamer from his rookie year with the Canadiens franchise. Steve appeared in 27 games for the Voyageurs before his call-up to the big club. Sewn into the collar of this vintage gamer is the Maska tag. Sewn to the right shoulder is the Nova Scotia logo. The game wear on this sweater consists of stick and puck marks, goal post paint transfer and areas of heavy pilling. A nice vintage minor league gamer of a player whose sweaters have been historically difficult to come by thanks in large part to his brief NHL career.
