1983-84 Mike Bossy New York Islanders Game Worn Jersey - 1st Team NHL All Star - Possible 400th Goal Photo Match Video Match
Lot #1
This home white mesh gamer by Syosset Sports was worn by Mike Bossy during the 1983-84 NHL season. The New York Islanders selected Bossy in the 1st round of the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft. Bossy burst onto the scene in 1977-78 and as a rookie scored a record setting 53 goals and captured the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year. Bossy spent his entire 10-year injury shortened career with the New York Islanders where he helped his team to Dynasty status by capturing 4 consecutive Stanley Cups in the early 1980’s.

His individual accomplishments are plentiful and simply too lengthy to list in full. Some of the highlights include an NHL record nine consecutive 50-Goal seasons, having done so in all but his final season where he was limited to 63 games after which he retired in his prime due to chronic back problems. In 1981, Mike became the 2nd player in NHL history to reach 50-Goals in 50-Games, doing so in dramatic fashion and tying a mark set by Maurice Rocket Richard four decades earlier. Mike has the highest goals per game average of the modern era at .762, and he led the NHL in goals twice. He is tied with Wayne Gretzky as the only players to have scored 60-Goals in 5 different seasons. Mike is tied with Hall of Famer Joe Malone as the only players to ever score hat tricks in 3 consecutive games. Bossy won the 1982 Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP and is a 3-time recipient of the Lady Byng Trophy. In a career limited to 752 games, Bossy scored 573 goals and 1126 points. His playoff acumen is no less impressive having scored 85 goals and 160 points in 129 games played. Mike was 8-times a 1st or 2nd Team NHL All Star at Right Wing and played in 7 NHL All Star games. On the international scene Bossy represented Team NHL in the 1979 Challenge Cup Series against the Soviet Union, and played in the 1981 and 1984 Canada Cups. Bossy was enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame upon eligibility in 1991 and had his player number 22 retired by the Islanders in 1992.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer are the wash, size and year tags. The game wear on this size 50 sweater is tremendous and consists of numerous stick and slash marks, plenty of board burns and colorful board paint transfer from the boards at the Nassau Coliseum, un-repaired holes, stitch pops, trauma to the front hem and inner pilling. The original fight strap remains perfectly sewn to the back beneath Bossy’s number 22. Shown above are some spectacular photo matches of Bossy wearing this exact jersey during the 1983-84 season. Also shown above are some beautiful video matches of Bossy wearing this exact jersey during a game on December 15th 1983 vs. Detroit.

Merely one month and just 8 home games later on January 14th 1983 against the NY Rangers, Bossy became the fastest player in NHL history to score his 400th goal. We have not been able to locate footage or photos from that historic night but believe there is a very strong likelihood that Bossy would have been wearing this jersey on that very night as he netted his 400th career NHL goal. All of the photo and video matches that you see above will of course accompany your purchase.

Bossy played in just 67 games during the 1983-84 season as injuries began to take their toll. Despite the injuries and lack of games, Mike extended his NHL record-scoring streak as he recorded his seventh consecutive 50-Goal season. Bossy scored 51 goals and added 67 assists for 118 points in those 67 games, earning his fourth consecutive 1st Team NHL All Star honors as well as the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy!

Bossy gamers have always been in extremely high demand and exceedingly short supply, a fact that many long time collectors will attest to as they continue to try to fill this important and elusive gap in their collections. This tremendous photo and video matched example was worn by Bossy during the prime of his Hall of Fame career, and quite likely, on the night he became the fastest player in NHL history to record his 400th career goal! This battered photo and video matched example hails from the Islanders historic “Drive For Five” and would become an instant cornerstone in any of the finest collections extant and is indeed Hall of Fame worthy, choice!
