1983-84 John Tortorella Nashville South Stars/Virginia Lancers Game Worn Jersey
Lot #539

This home white mesh gamer by Goodsports was worn by John Tortorella during the 1983-84 ACHL season. Tortorella played his college hockey at the University of Maine before beginning his professional career in the ACHL in 1982-83. This Boston, MA native spent all 4 years of his playing career in the long defunct ACHL where he played for Hampton Roads, Erie and Virginia. Immediately following his playing career, Tortorella became the Virginia Lancers head coach and guided his team to the 1987 ACHL Championship. “Torts“ has spent nearly 30 seasons behind the benches in the NHL, representing the Sabres, Coyotes, Rangers, Lightning, Canucks and most recently the Blue Jackets. In addition to the 1987 ACHL Championship, John won the 1996 AHL Calder Cup as the Rochester Americans Head Coach and went on to win the Stanley Cup in 2004 as the Tampa Bay Lightning Head Coach. Tortorella is a 2-time Jack Adams Award winner as NHL Coach of the Year.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the Captain’s “C”. The game wear on this size 52 sweater is tremendous and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, loads of un-repaired burn holes, stitch pops galore, an outline from the old coin style fight strap and inner pilling. This vintage minor league rarity began its life as a Nashville South Stars gamer before having the “N” logo cut down to a “V”. This was done mid-season, as the Nashville South Stars franchise became the Virginia Lancers. An incredible piece of minor league hockey history, worn during the Virginia Lancers inaugural season by their Team Captain and 2-time Jack Adams Award winning Head Coach, John Tortorella.
