1983-84 Guy Carbonneau Montreal Canadiens Game Worn Jersey The Guy Carbonneau Collection - 2nd NHL Season - Guy Carbonneau Letter
Lot #14
It is with great pleasure that we bring you another item from the personal collection of 3-time Stanley Cup Champion Guy Carbonneau. This game worn jersey has been in Guy’s personal collection since leaving the ice and is fresh to the hobby. A signed letter from Mr. Carbonneau will accompany your purchase.

This road red knit gamer by CCM was worn by Guy Carbonneau during the 1983-84 NHL season, his sophomore year. The Montreal Canadiens selected Carbonneau in the 3rd round of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. Guy made his NHL debut in 1980-81 with Les Habitants and spent the first 13 years of his 19-year, 1318-game NHL career with Montreal. Following 2 Stanley Cup titles with the Canadiens, Carbonneau spent a season with the St. Louis Blues before joining the Dallas Stars where he spent the final 5 years of his storied career. During his final 2 years with the Stars, Carbonneau made back-to-back trips to the Stanley Cup Finals and skated away with his 3rd Stanley Cup ring. In the tradition of Bob Gainey before him, Carbonneau took over the reigns as the NHL’s best defensive forward and was so recognized with 3 Frank J. Selke Trophies spanning 1988 to 1992.

The 1983-84 season turned into an exciting one for the Canadiens come playoff time. Despite finishing the regular season sub .500 for the first time in 44 years, Montreal plowed through division rivals Boston and Quebec before falling to the 4-time Stanley Cup Champion New York Islanders in the Conference Finals in a hard-fought 6-game series that left them just shy of the Stanley Cup Finals. Carbonneau had a fine sophomore season as he netted 24 goals, including a career best 7 shorthanded, and added 30 assists for 54 points and 75 PIMS to go along with his trademark stellar defensive play. In fact he was the Canadiens winner of Hockey Night in Canada’s Molson Cup and earned the highest compliment from Head Coach Jacques Lemaire who said, “Carbo is one of the best, if not the best, defensive player in the league”. Not bad for a 24-year old in only his 2nd NHL season!

Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the born on date that reads “01-84”. The game wear on this size 48 sweater is tremendous and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, material pulls, stitch pops, washed out bloodstains and fine inner pilling; in addition, the entire jersey is just littered with vintage Canadiens repair work, by our count there are in excess of 150 team-sewn repairs, wow! A garter style fight strap was added just beneath the back player numbers by the team. To our knowledge this is the earliest NHL gamer of Carbonneau’s to ever hit the auction block and perhaps to have ever surfaced in the hobby. This hammered example will be accompanied by Mr. Carbonneau’s signed LOA and hails straight from Guy’s personal collection where it sat incredibly preserved since leaving the ice more than 30 years ago, choice!
