Description
1982-84 John Garrett Vancouver Canucks Game Worn Jersey
Lot #32
This home gold V-Style gamer by Maska was worn by John Garrett during either the 1982-83 or 1983-84 NHL season. The St. Louis Blues selected Garrett in the 3rd round of the 1971 NHL Amateur Draft. This goalie spent 6 seasons between the pipes in the WHA, representing the Fighting Saints, Toros, Bulls and Whalers before joining the NHL in 1979-80 as part of the merger. Garrett played for parts of 3 seasons with the Hartford Whalers before joining the Quebec Nordiques for parts of two more years. Garrett finished up his career by spending parts of 3 seasons with the Vancouver Canucks.

This super long gamer has been customized for Garrett by the Canucks. Custom panels have been sewn into both sides of this jersey and extend from the hem to the underarm to provide a roomier fit. The embroidered Maska label has been cut away from the rear tail and positioned upwards with the removal area covered up with a rectangular swatch of gold knit material. The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and puck marks, un-repaired trauma, material pulls, areas of fine pilling and a couple of team-sewn repairs on the belly with another handful in the area of the nameplate removal. Garrett was one of but a few goalies who pushed the “no jersey size rule” to its limits during the early 1980’s. Must’ve been frustrating trying to get one thru the 5-hole! These rarely seen oversized goalie gamers offer an insight into the history of goaltending during this brief era and are always coveted by vintage and goalie collectors alike.
