Description
1982-83 Pat Hughes Edmonton Oilers Game Worn Jersey - "1983 Universiade"
Lot #46

This home white heavy mesh gamer by Nike was worn by Pat Hughes during the 1982-83 NHL season. The Montreal Canadiens drafted Hughes in the 1975 NHL Amatuer Draft. After spending 3 years playing at the University of Michigan, Hughes began his professional career with Les Habitants. Pat spent 2 seasons in Montreal and celebrated as the team won 2 Stanley Cups. Hughes next played in Pittsburgh for 2 years before a deal sent him to Edmonton during the 1980-81 campaign. Pat spent a handful of seasons in Edmonton where he went to 3 Stanley Cup Finals and walked away with another 2 championship rings. He finished his career with short stops in Buffalo, St. Louis and Hartford.

Offered here is Hughes’ home sweater from 1982-83, a very important season in franchise history. The Oilers would make their first ever Stanley Cup Finals appearance that season only to fall at the hands of the New York Islanders dynasty. The lessons learned would serve Gretzky and the boys well the following season, as they dethroned the Islanders and jump-started their own dynasty.

Sewn to the right shoulder of this jersey is the 1983 Universiade patch. The sleeves have been customized by the team. This jersey exhibits tremendous game wear and is also the only home jersey in the collection of 1982-83 Oilers jerseys being offered! The game wear consists of loads of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, heavy inner pilling and in excess of two dozen team-sewn repairs! In fact, areas of both sleeves feature large areas of repairs atop repairs. This fine looking sweater features the ever-desirable 1983 Universiade patch and was worn as the Oilers trekked to their first ever Stanley Cup Finals appearance. Also worthy of note is the Nike logo that is found on the back right hem. These Nike jerseys are the only ones in team history where the Nike logo is not found on the back left hem. Nike watched in dismay as ‘The Great One’ tucked the lower right side of his jersey into his pants during the entire 1982-83 campaign, thus covering their logo. Nike’s brass were quick to make the logo adjustment to the left side the following year and that was the way the Oilers would wear them for the next 7 seasons!
