This home white knit gamer by Maska was worn by Mike Gartner during the 1982-83 NHL season. Gartner was the 4th overall selection in the 1979 NHL entry draft. The Capitals, who selected him, would get the privilege of his services for the first 10 years of his career. He is still considered the greatest Capital to ever wear the team colors. Following his time in Washington Gartner went on to play for the North Stars, Rangers, Maple Leafs and Coyotes.
His Hall of Fame stats are simply staggering, with in excess of 700 career goals and 1300 career points. He is one of a handful of players ever to eclipse 700 career goals, standing among the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Marcel Dionne, Phil Esposito and Brett Hull. Mike amassed 15 different 30-goal seasons with 8 of them being 40 or better, including one of 50. He proudly represented his team in 7 different NHL All Star contests. Mike also represented Team Canada in the 1984 and 1987 Canada Cups. He was a true credit to the sport and is a deserving member of Hockey’s Hall of Fame.
This vintage sweater is now a quarter century old and was worn by Mike during the very early part of his NHL career. The game wear is solid consisting of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, inner pilling, washed out bloodstains and a half dozen team-sewn repairs. The Maska and wash tags remain sewn perfectly into the collar and the jersey has that soft, well washed feel that is unique to Maska made gamers from this vintage. For those in the know, the original nameplate is certainly a treat, something not commonly found on these early Capitals sweaters. This example is without question one of the finest Gartner gamers to ever surface in our hobby. A certain Hall of Fame caliber sweater fit for any Hall of Fame collection.
