This blue mesh jersey by Sandow SK was worn by Mike Liut during training camp for the 1981 Canada Cup. The St. Louis Blues and New England Whalers each selected Liut in the 1976 NHL and WHA Amateur Drafts. After playing his college hockey at Bowling Green State University, Liut made his WHA debut in 1977-78 with the Cincinnati Stingers. Liut spent two years in the WHA before the leagues collapse in 1979. Mike entered the NHL and made his debut in 1979-80 with the St. Louis Blues who still owned his rights. Over the next five and a half years, Liut became St. Louis’ all-time leader in games played and Wins. Liut was twice a first or second Team NHL All Star who represented St. Louis in the 1981 NHL All Star game. Liut won the 1981 Lester B. Pearson Trophy as the NHL’s most outstanding player and finished runner-up to Wayne Gretzky for the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP. Following his tenure with St. Louis, Liut went on to play for the Hartford Whalers for parts of 6 years and then spent a final few seasons with the Washington Capitals. Mike won better than 300 games between his NHL and WHA career and also starred between the pipes for Team Canada during the 1981 Canada Cup.
Light but obvious wear exists on this size L training camp sweater, consisting of stick and puck marks, un-repaired slashes and trauma, heavy collar pilling and inner pilling. Liut was coming off of his MVP season and won the starting job for Team Canada. He played Goal in all but one of Team Canada’s games, posting a 4-1 record with a 3.17 GAA and 1 shutout in the tournament. A beautiful rare fresh to the hobby international offering that comes to you directly from the personal collection of former Montreal Canadiens and Team Canada member, Gaetan Lefebvre.
