1981-82 Ray Neufeld Binghamton Whalers Game Worn Jersey
Lot #374

This road green mesh gamer by Good Sports was worn by Ray Neufeld during the 1981-82 AHL season. The Hartford Whalers selected Neufeld in the 4th round of the 1979 NHL Entry Draft. This Winkler, MAN native made his NHL debut in 1979-80 with Hartford where he played for parts of 7 seasons before joining the Winnipeg Jets for four years and finally the Boston Bruins for a couple of years. Neufeld was a tough winger who put forth four successive 20-goal and triple digit PIMS seasons. Neufeld finished his NHL career with 814 PIMS in 595 games played.

This jersey has been customized for Neufeld by the team. Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the manufacturers, wash, size and year tagging. The game wear on this size 54 sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, fight abuse with a vented, torn and heavily abused and repaired front collar, inner and outer pilling and a couple of handfuls of team-sewn repairs. Removed from the upper verso and lost to history is the player nameplate, a commonality on these early Whalers gamers. At just 22 years of age while wearing this sweater, Neufeld played 61 games with the Binghamton Whalers during the 1981-82 season. Ray helped lead his club to a Southern Division title and a trip to the Calder Cup Finals. He scored 28 goals and added 31 assists for 59 points to go along with 81 PIMS in the regular season before adding 9 goals and 17 points in 15 playoff games as the Whalers dreams of a Championship fell just shy in Binghamton’s second season as an AHL franchise.
