1981-82 Bobby Carpenter Capitals Game Worn Jersey - Rookie Jersey - Photo Matched
Lot #14
This road red knit gamer by Maska was worn by Bobby Carpenter during the 1981-82 NHL season, his rookie year. Carpenter was the Washington Capitals 1st round pick in the 1981 NHL entry draft. He was the 3rd overall selection that season. Bobby immediately made his impact felt in the league with a couple of 30+ goal seasons, which was soon followed by a 53-goal outburst during the 1984-85 campaign. Bobby will forever be remembered as the 1st US born player to record a 50-goal season in the NHL. Carpenter enjoyed an impressive 18-year career which included an All Star berth in 1985. He represented Team USA during the 1984 and 1987 Canada Cups. After a failed cup attempt with Boston in 1990, a Stanley Cup title finally arrived with the New Jersey Devils in 1995. All told Carpenter scored 320 goals and 728 career points in his NHL career.

The game wear on this red Maska knit is outstanding. According to the teams’ equipment manager, the Capitals ordered a single set of jerseys for the entire 1981-82 season. That policy of one jersey per season was just the way things were in the nation’s capitol in that era. This awesome piece of Washington hockey history shows the battle scars from an entire seasons worth of use. There are numerous stick marks and board burns that litter the body, shoulders and sleeves of this gamer. In addition there is an array of colorful board paint transfer, pilling and in excess of a dozen team-sewn repairs. One of the repairs looks like it was the result of a nasty board burn as it measures nearly 5 inches in length and runs from the upper arm into the shoulder. This young protege undoubtedly took plenty of abuse in this sweater as month after month he stepped into the oppositions home town rinks. Shown above are photo matches of Carpenter wearing this exact gamer during his rookie season. It certainly doesn’t get any better than this for the USA or Capitals collectors who are looking to add a statement piece to the collection.
