1980 Buzz Schneider Team USA Pre-Olympic Game Worn Jersey - The St. Paul, Minnesota Collection - Miracle On Ice Alum
Lot #17

This beautiful jersey was first introduced to the hobby as part of the St. Paul, Minnesota Collection that we unveiled in the Fall 2015 Auction.

This white mesh and knit gamer was worn by William “Buzz” Schneider while skating for Team USA during the 1980 Pre-Olympic schedule. The Pittsburgh Penguins selected Schneider in the 6th round of the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft. Simultaneously, the Minnesota Fighting Saints selected Buzz in the 3rd round of the 1974 WHA Amateur Draft. This Grand Rapids, MN native played his college hockey at the University of Minnesota under head Coach Herb Brooks. Buzz played for the US National Team in the World Championships in 1974, 75 and 76 and spent the entire 1975-76 season with the US Olympic Team where he played a full 64 game schedule. Over the next several seasons Schneider spent time in the WHA, CHL and IHL.

In 1979-80, this Olympian attended tryouts for the 1980 US Olympic Team and made the squad thus reuniting him with his collegiate Head Coach, Herb Brooks. During the 1980 Olympics, Schneider teamed on Team USA’s highest scoring line with Mark Pavelich and John Harrington. Buzz was magnificent, scoring 5 goals and adding 3 assists for 8 points in 7 Olympic games en route to “The Miracle On Ice”. Buzz is a deserving member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.

Schneider played in 62 games for Team USA leading up to the 1980 Olympics and then partook in 7 more at Lake Placid as Team USA shocked the world by winning the Gold Medal. Team USA wore this set of mesh and knit combos during the early part of their schedule, prior to the more familiar sets that were made by Norcon. Team USA played their Pre-Olympic home games at the Met in Minnesota, which only adds to the allure of this gamer being part of the St. Paul Collection. The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, familiar board paint transfer from the Met, un-repaired burn holes, sweat stains, stitch pops, fine inner pilling and some team-sewn repair work. A stunning discovery that should excite the Miracle on Ice collectors; this treasure hailed from the exciting St. Paul, Minnesota Collection that we originally brought to the hobby in the Fall 2015 Auction, choice!
