1980-81 Paul Gardner Pittsburgh Penguins Game Worn Jersey - Inaugural Sunday Gold Set
Lot #58

This Sunday Gold mesh gamer by Sandow SK was worn by Paul Gardner during the 1980-81 NHL season. The Kansas City Scouts selected Gardner with the 11th overall pick in the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft. He began his NHL career with the Colorado Rockies in 1976-77 and spent 3 years with the club before a deadline deal in 1978-79 sent him to the Maple Leafs. Paul played parts of two years in Toronto and then began a 4-year stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1980-81. Gardner finished up his 10-year NHL career with short stays in Washington and Buffalo. This Fort Erie native was an accomplished goal scorer who, despite missing significant time on many occasions due to injury, still managed to score 30 goals or better four different times. Following his NHL days, Gardner starred in the AHL where he was 2-times a 1st Team AHL All Star, won the scoring title in 1985 and 1986 and was named the AHL’s Most Valuable Player in 1985 and 1986.

The game wear on this size XL sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes, stitch pops, heavy collar pilling, inner pilling and team-sewn repair work. The 1980-81 season was the first time that the Pittsburgh Penguins wore a Sunday Gold jersey. Gardner had a career best 74-point season on the strength of 34 goals and 40 assists in just 62 games played in 1980-81 while wearing this sweater. A beautiful well-worn offering from the inaugural set of Sunday Gold sweaters and worn by Gardner during a career year.
