1980-81 Marty Howe Hartford Whalers Game Worn Jersey - The New England Collection
Lot #52

This home white mesh and knit gamer by Good Sports was worn by Marty Howe during the 1980-81 NHL season. The Montreal Canadiens selected Howe in the 3rd round of the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft. This native of Detroit, MI chose to join his father Gordie and brother Mark in the WHA, where the trio debuted in 1973-74 with the Houston Aeros. Following four seasons in Houston, Marty and his esteemed family members joined the New England Whalers in 1977-78 where they remained through the remaining two WHA seasons and the eventual transfer to become the NHL’s Hartford Whalers. Marty played a total of 449 games in the WHA over the course of 6 seasons. Though not as adept offensively as his father and brother, Marty did manage four consecutive double-digit goal seasons including a career best of 17 in 1976-77 from his position on the blueline. Other than a season with the Boston Bruins, Howe’s 6-year NHL career was spent entirely with the Whalers in Hartford.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer are the manufacturers, wash, size and year tagging. The game wear on this size 50 sweater consists of stick marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes, washed out bloodstains, stitch pops and inner pilling. Marty played a total of 12 games for Hartford in 1980-81, spending 25 minutes in the sin bin. Sewn to the inside back player numbers is the original double garter style fight strap. Sewn to the upper verso in individually sewn on lettering is Marty Howe, synonymous with being part of hockey’s royal family. Marty’s NHL jerseys have proven pretty difficult to come by over the years, based in part on his short NHL career. This 2nd year Hartford Whalers gamer was first introduced to the hobby as part of the exciting New England Collection that debuted as part of our Spring 2015 Auction. A nice vintage offering that sports hockey’s iconic family name.
