1980-81 Kent Nilsson Calgary Flames Game Worn Jersey - Inaugural Season - 131 Point Season Photo Match
Lot #22

This road red knit gamer by Maska was worn by Kent Nilsson during the 1980-81 NHL season. The Atlanta Flames selected Nilsson in the 4th round of the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft. The Toronto Toros simultaneously selected Kent in the 1st round of the 1976 WHA Amateur Draft. Nilsson, a native of Sweden, began his North American career in 1977-78 with the Winnipeg Jets of the WHA. After spending 2 seasons with the Jets, he began his NHL career with the Atlanta Flames in 1979-80 and made the move with the franchise to Calgary a year later. Nilsson would later skate for the North Stars and Oilers where he won his only Stanley Cup in 1987.

Kent was the winner of the Lou Kaplan Trophy as WHA rookie of the year in 1978 and won the Paul Daneau Trophy as leagues most gentlemanly player in 1979. He also played in the NHL All Star game in his first two seasons with the Flames, 1980 and 1981. Despite playing only 2 seasons in the league, Kent was recognized in a poll as the 33rd greatest WHA player in league history. In 158 WHA games he netted 81 goals and 214 points. In 553 NHL games, Kent scored 264 goals and 686 points leaving his mark as one of the elite scorer’s of his era.

During his first season in Calgary in 1980-81, Kent put together his most impressive professional season as he scored 49 goals and 131 points, which placed him 3rd in league scoring behind only Wayne Gretzky and Marcel Dionne. That stellar season earned Nilsson a spot in the NHL All Star game and thus became the Atlanta Flames last and the Calgary Flames first NHL All Star. After winning a Stanley Cup with the Oilers in 1987, Kent returned to Sweden where he continued his brilliance, winning the Swedish Player of the Year award in 1989. Nilsson also represented Team Sweden during 3 different Canada Cups, 1981, 1984 and 1987.

The game wear on this size 48 sweater is tremendous and consists of numerous stick and slash marks, plenty of board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, pulls, fine exterior pilling, heavy inner pilling and upwards of 50 team-sewn repairs! Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Nilsson wearing this exact jersey during the 1980-81 season. Nilsson lit the lamp 49 times and added 82 assists for 131 points, earning All Star status and finishing 3rd in the NHL scoring race while wearing this jersey during Calgary’s inaugural NHL season. First year Calgary Flames gamers have been virtually non-existent in the hobby, their whereabouts remaining one of the hobby’s great mysteries. In fact, this example is the first we’ve ever had the pleasure of offering. This battered photo matched example is a true hobby rarity and a must have for any serious Calgary or vintage type style collector, choice!
