1980-81 John Hughes Wichita Wind Game Worn Jersey - Inaugural Season
Lot #282
This home white knit gamer by Maska was worn by John Hughes during the 1980-81 CHL season. The Vancouver Canucks and Houston Aeros each selected Hughes in the 1974 NHL and WHA Amateur Drafts. Hughes spent 5 seasons in the WHA before the merger in 1979-80. His NHL career saw him play for the Canucks, Oilers and Rangers. This hard-nosed defenseman amassed just shy of 1000 PIMS in 442 NHL/WHA games played.

Hughes spent the 1980-81 season with the Edmonton Oilers and their CHL affiliate, the Wichita Wind. Wichita was Edmonton’s top farm team and 1980-81 was their inaugural season. Garnet “Ace” Bailey, who died in the Twin Towers on 9-11, coached Wichita to game 7 of the 1980-81 CHL Finals where they lost to Joe Mullen’s Salt Lake City team. The Wind, which survived as a franchise for just 3 years, featured a number of current and future Edmonton Oilers including Andy Moog, Ron Low, Don Murdoch, Dave Semenko and Charlie Huddy.

The game wear on this vintage knit is tremendous and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, washed out bloodstains, plenty of trauma, pulls, fine inner pilling and major team-sewn repair work, about 20 in all, including an 11” x 11” patch job on the verso! A hammered vintage offering worn by this former NHL and WHA veteran with ties to the early Edmonton Oilers origins.
