1980-81 Glenn “Chico” Resch New York Islanders Game Worn Jersey - Photo Match
Lot #26

This important game worn jersey originated from the personal collection of New York Islanders Hall of Fame Goalie Billy Smith. Chico and Smitty exchanged gamers for their respective personal collections prior to Chico departing for his new home in Colorado with the Rockies. A signed letter from Billy Smith will accompany your purchase.

This home white mesh gamer by Sandow SK was worn by Glenn “Chico” Resch during the 1980-81 Stanley Cup winning season, his last year with the Islanders. Chico made his NHL debut with the New York Islanders in 1974 and remained on Long Island until he was dealt to Colorado in 1981. During his time on the Island he became looked upon as one of the NHL’s top goaltenders. Islanders fans will never forget Chico’s playoff heroics as a rookie in 1975, as he led his team back from 3-0 series deficits two straight times to force game 7’s before falling to the Stanley Cup Champion Flyers in the Semi-Finals. After leaving New York, Resch spent parts of two seasons with the Colorado Rockies and then four more with he New Jersey Devils. Resch wrapped up his goaltending career in Philadelphia in 1986-87. In addition to winning the 1980 Stanley Cup, Chico won the 1981-82 Bill Masterton Trophy, was twice a 2nd team NHL All Star and played in 3 NHL All Star Games.

Resch dazzled as a rookie, taking over the starting reigns during the season and then leading the Islanders to some incredible playoff victories. No Islanders fan will ever forget the team making history as they stunned the Rangers in Sudden Death OT at MSG in the Prelims and then overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Penguins in the Quarter Finals. Amazingly, the Isles overcame another 3-0 deficit against Philadelphia before falling in Game 7 of the Semi Finals in just their third season as a franchise!

The game wear on this Goalie Cut sweater is solid and consists of a good many stick, slash and puck marks, board paint transfer, crossbar paint transfer and inner pilling. Shown above are some beautiful photo matches of Chico wearing this exact jersey during the 1980-81 season. One of the images depicts Chico standing alongside Billy Smith as they watch the raising of the Islanders first Stanley Cup Championship banner on the season’s opening night in 1980-81. Chico’s Islanders gamers are a notoriously tough get, with this being the 1st in all-original condition that we’ve ever had the pleasure to bring to Auction. This spectacular photo matched offering hails from the personal collection of Hall of Fame teammate Billy Smith and was worn during the Isles 2nd Stanley Cup Championship season, choice!
