This blue mesh gamer by Sandow SK was worn by Garry Howatt during the 1980-81 Stanley Cup winning season. The New York Islanders selected Howatt in the 10th round of the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. He began his NHL career on the Island during the franchise’s inaugural season of 1972-73 and thus became one of only a few original New York Islanders to win the Stanley Cup some eight years later. Howatt spent 9 seasons with the Islanders and provided the team with spark and muscle despite his small frame. He would win 2 Stanley Cups with the Islanders before finishing his career with the Whalers and Devils. In 720 games played, this firecracker amassed 1836 PIMS and took on all comers no matter their size. Howatt didn’t slow down come playoff time as he partook in 87 playoff contests with the Islanders and accumulated a remarkable 289 PIMS!
This sweater has been customized for Howatt with the sleeves and body having been shortened by the Islanders. The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, inner pilling and some team-sewn repair work. Shown above are some video highlights of Howatt letting fly for your enjoyment. Howatt wore this sweater during his last year with the Islanders, one that saw the Isles repeat as Stanley Cup Champions. These Sandow SK sweaters are highly coveted among Islanders collectors due to their direct ties to the Stanley Cup dynasty years. A terrific customized example donned by this pugilist during a season that saw him register 174 PIMS and win his 2nd Stanley Cup!
