1979 Serge Bernier WHA All Star Game Worn Jersey
Lot #38

We acquired this 1979 WHA All Star game worn jersey directly from Serge Bernier as part of the Serge Bernier Collection back in 2002. With nearly 20 years having gone by since the acquisition, it is our distinct pleasure to offer this sweater at auction for the very first time.

This white mesh WHA All Star gamer by Cosby was worn by Serge Bernier during the 3-game 1979 WHA All Star Game series against the Russians. The Philadelphia Flyers made Serge the first player selected in franchise history, taking him with the 5th overall pick in the 1967 NHL Amateur Draft. Bernier made his NHL debut in 1968-69 and spent parts of four seasons with the Flyers before playing for a couple of years with the Los Angeles Kings. Bernier next jumped to the upstart WHA in 1973-74 when he signed on with the Quebec Nordiques. Serge would spend the remainder of his career with Quebec, playing the remaining 6 WHA seasons and then playing a couple more in the NHL after the merger.

Bernier’s WHA career was legendary. In a memorable poll done many years ago that ranked the WHA’s 50 greatest players, Bernier ranked 13th on that prestigious list! Bernier is the WHA’s 6th all-time leader in Goals with 230, he ranks 5th all-time in assists with 336 and Serge was the 4th highest scorer in WHA history with 566 points, all despite having missed the leagues inaugural season. Bernier’s playoff acumen is no less impressive. He ranks 6th all-time with 28 goals, 4th all-time with 46 assists and was the WHA’s 3rd all-time leading playoff scorer with 72 points, trailing only Bobby Hull and Mark Howe.

The highlight of Bernier’s career came during the 1977 playoffs as Serge was named playoff MVP as he led his Nordiques to their first and only Avco Cup Championship, defeating Bobby Hull and the Jets in a thrilling 7-game series. Bernier played in the WHA All Star Game in all 6 of his WHA seasons including the 1974 8-Game Summit Series between Team Canada WHA and the Soviet Union. The 1979 WHA All Star Game was a 3-game series that pitted the WHA’s finest against Moscow Dynamo. Headlining the WHA squad were Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky, Gordie and Mark Howe, Dave Keon and Mike Gartner. The games were played in early January 1979 in Edmonton, Alberta and the WHA won each of the hard-fought contests.

These striking red, white and blue jerseys featured cross over collars with sewn on lettering and numbering. Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the alternate Captain’s “A”. The game wear on this size 48 sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer and inner pilling. Bernier wore this jersey throughout the three games against the Russians and in fact scored the game-winning goal in the third and final game while wearing this sweater. These 1979 WHA All Star jerseys have proven particularly elusive through the years, with this being just one of three examples of these prized sweaters that we’ve ever had the pleasure to bring to auction. A tremendous offering packed with impeccable provenance that sports the coveted letter of honor and was worn by one of the WHA’s all-time greats during the final installment of the WHA All Star Game in history, choice!
