This white mesh WHA All Star gamer by Cosby with socks was worn by Mark Howe during the 3-game 1979 WHA All Star Game series against the Russians. The Boston Bruins selected Howe in the 2nd round of the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft. Mark Howe’s illustrious career spanned 22 seasons; the first 6 of those were spent in the WHA as a teammate of his legendary father Gordie and brother Marty. In 426 WHA games, Mark tallied a lofty 504 points, leaving his mark as one of the WHA’s all time best. His NHL career was no less impressive. In 929 games this defenseman banked 742 points leaving his career points total in excess of 1200. He was among the highest scoring defenseman of his era and was finally recognized with induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the class of 2011.

Mark was three times a 1st team NHL All Star and was twice a 1st or 2nd team WHA All Star. He played in four NHL All Star games, four WHA All Star games and was the recipient of the Lou Kaplan Trophy in 1974 as the WHA’s Rookie of the Year. Howe also nabbed the 1986 NHL +/- award. Most would be surprised to find out that Howe’s year-by-year goal totals in the WHA in which he played in 70+ games read 38, 36, 39, 30 and 42. His career best for points came in 1978-79 with the Whalers, when Mark rang up an impressive 107 points.

Howe joined the NHL along with his New England Whalers teammates, as they became the Hartford Whalers in 1979-80 following the collapse of the WHA. After a few impressive seasons with Hartford, Mark joined the Philadelphia Flyers and proved the key piece to their puzzle. His leadership and stellar play from the point helped the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1985 and 1987, where they fell short both times to the Edmonton Oilers dynasty. Howe completed his Hall of Fame career in Detroit, the city in which he was born.

Howe earned his 4th WHA All Star Game appearance in 1979 thanks to his dominance of the scoring leader boards that season. Mark scored career bests in goals, assists and points in 1978-79 as he lit the lamp 42 times and added 65 assists for 107 points. The 1979 WHA All Star Game was a 3-game series that pitted the WHA’s finest against Moscow Dynamo. Headlining the WHA squad were Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky, Gordie and Mark Howe, Dave Keon and Mike Gartner. The games were played in early January 1979 in Edmonton, Alberta and the WHA won each of the hard-fought contests. This All Star series will forever go down in history, as some of hockey’s all-time greats, Wayne Gretzky and Gordie and Mark Howe played on the same line. It was a dream fulfilled for #99 to have a chance to play alongside his boyhood idol, Gordie Howe. Gretzky led the team in scoring with 3 goals and 2 assists with Mark Howe right behind with 2 goals and 2 assists while Gordie contributed 3 assists to the winning efforts.

Also shown above are some video highlights of Mark Howe wearing this jersey during the 1979 WHA All Star series. Howe was brilliant playing alongside his father Gordie and The Great One during the 1979 WHA All Star Series. Mark scored four points in the series, netting the game-winning goal in Game 1 and then scoring the game-tying goal in Game 2. These 1979 WHA All Star jerseys have proven particularly elusive through the years, with this being just one of three examples of these prized sweaters that we’ve ever had the pleasure to bring to auction.
