1979 Guy Lapointe NHL All Star Challenge Cup Game Worn Jersey
Lot #24

This white dureen gamer by Cosby was worn by Guy Lapointe during the 1979 NHL All Star Challenge Cup. Lapointe made his NHL debut in 1968-69 with the Montreal Canadiens where he played valiantly for 14 seasons before completing his career with stops in St. Louis and Boston. Lapointe, along with Larry Robinson and Serge Savard, formed the “Big Three”, the greatest collection of defenseman on a single team in NHL history, with each becoming Hockey Hall of Famers. This 6-time Stanley Cup Champion was a four-time 1st or 2nd Team NHL All Star who also partook in four NHL All Star Games. Lapointe holds the Montreal record for goals by a defenseman in a single season with 28 and in fact struck for 20+ in three consecutive seasons. On the international stage, Lapointe represented Team Canada in the 1972 Summit Series as well as the 1976 Canada Cup and the 1979 Challenge Cup. In 2014, this Hall of Famer had his player number 5 retired by the Canadiens, never to be worn again.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the Cosby and size tag. The game wear on this size 50 sweater consists of stick and slash marks and inner pilling. Shown above are some images of Lapointe taken during the 1979 Challenge Cup against the Soviet Union. The 1979 NHL All Star Game was replaced with the 1979 Challenge Cup, a 3-Game Series pitting the NHL All Stars against the Soviets at Madison Square Garden in an epic Cold War battle. Merely a few months after the conclusion of the series, Lapointe and his Canadiens would cement their dynasty status by winning their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup. A beautiful example worn by this 6-time Stanley Cup winning Hall of Famer.
