1979-80 Tony McKegney Buffalo Sabres Game Worn Jersey “1980 Olympic”
Lot #25
This road blue knit gamer by Maska was worn by Tony McKegney during the 1979-80 NHL season, his sophomore season. The Buffalo Sabres selected McKegney in the 2nd round of the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft. He began his career with the Sabres in 1978-79 and spent 5 seasons roaming the wing at the Aud. He would go on to represent the Nordiques, North Stars, Rangers, Blues, Red Wings and Black Hawks before hanging up his skates. McKegney notched his career best 40 Goals in 1987-88 with the St. Louis Blues, surpassing the 37 Goal mark he had established in Buffalo. Over a 13-year NHL career that spanned 912 games, McKegney netted an impressive 320 goals and tallied 639 points.

The 1979-80 season was a special one in Buffalo. Playing under the guidance of their new boss Scotty Bowman, the Sabres established themselves as the best defensive team in the league. They went on to win the Adams division with a gaudy 110 points while allowing a mere 201 goals against, the leagues best total. The Sabres stormed into the playoffs and had their sights set on Lord Stanley’s Cup. However it wasn’t to be, as they ran into the New York Islanders dynasty in the Semi Finals and fell in 6 games, completing one of the most exciting seasons in team history.

Sewn to the right breast of this gamer is the 1980 Olympic patch. The Sabres wore this coveted set of Maska game jerseys with the tiny double logos for the majority of the 1979-80 NHL season. Many hockey fans consider the 1980 Miracle On Ice Olympic games as the greatest moment in the history of the sport. Those Olympic games took place in Lake Placid, New York. Buffalo was one of two teams, the New York Islanders being the other, who donned the 1980 Olympic patch on their game jerseys. Of all of the 1980 Olympic Patched Buffalo Sabres jerseys that we’ve had the privilege to handle, this one easily ranks as the best in terms of use, as this jersey is simply hammered! The game wear on this vintage sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, inner pilling and a remarkable number of team-sewn repairs. Both sleeves are literally covered with repair work making a precise count just about impossible. We would surmise that there could be as many as 100 team-sewn repairs on this amazing example. Let us also not forget to mention the custom fight strap that remains sewn to the inside beneath the back player number.

This hammered jersey has been buried away for more than three decades since leaving the back of McKegney and is now entering our hobby for the first time. This outstanding example was worn by McKegney during his 2nd NHL season and is now ready to become a focal piece in your collection of vintage Blue & Gold Buffalo gamers!
