1979-80 Inge Hammarstrom Team Sweden Game Worn Jersey
Lot #75

This yellow mesh and knit gamer by SportJohan Sweden was worn by Inge Hammarstrom circa the late 1970’s or early 1980’s. The Toronto Maple Leafs signed Hammarstrom and his good friend Borje Salming to contracts in 1973. It was groundbreaking as the pair paved the way for the NHL to become a truly international sport. Hammarstrom had begun his career in his native Sweden in 1963. He was among his country’s best players and won three Swedish Championships in the early 1970’s. Inge also represented Sweden in numerous World Championships, the 1976 Canada Cup and during the 1972 Olympics. Inge began his NHL career with the Maple Leafs in 1973-74 and remained with the club for parts of five seasons before playing a couple of years with the St. Louis Blues. He was a consistent 20-goal scorer who was unfairly labeled as soft by Leafs owner Harold Ballard. In 1979, Inge returned home to Sweden and led his team to the 1979-80 Swedish Championship, the fourth of his career. Inge retired following the 1981-82 season and became a renowned NHL scout whose best find to this day remains Peter Forsberg.

The game wear on this sweater is solid and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, material pulls, fine inner pilling and some significant team-sewn repair work. A terrific 40-year old gamer that was worn by one of Sweden’s finest during international competition in representation of the Swedish National Team.
