1979-80 Bobby Nystrom New York Islanders Stanley Cup Finals Game Worn Jersey – “1980 Lake Placid Olympic” - Photo Match - Video Match
Lot #4
This road blue mesh and knit gamer by Goodman & Sons and Bill Vanderburg was worn by Bobby Nystrom during the 1979-80 NHL regular season, playoffs and Stanley Cup Finals. The New York Islanders selected Nystrom in the 3rd round of the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. Bob joined the team during their inaugural season of 1972-73 and retired following the 1985-86 campaign having spent all of his 14 years and 900 games of NHL service with the Islanders. Nystrom became one of the franchise’s first star players and has had his player number “23” retired to the rafters, never to be worn again, alongside those of his celebrated Hall of Fame teammates.

Nystrom, who was nicknamed “Mr. Islander”, was an NHL All Star who combined an ability to score goals as well as wreak havoc on the opposition. Bob was considered one of the best fighters of his era and the term power forward aptly applies to this winger. The other term often associated with Nystrom is clutch. Nystrom is in rare company having scored 4 playoff overtime game-winning goals. The most memorable of those coming on May 24th 1980, as his overtime winner in game 6 of the Finals sent Lord Stanley’s Cup to the Islanders for the first time in what would become four consecutive Stanley Cups on Long Island and dynasty status. Nystrom’s efforts during the Islanders first Stanley Cup run will never be forgotten. Not only did he net multiple overtime winners, Bob scored a total of 9 goals and 18 points to go along with 50 PIMS in 20 playoff games in what was very arguably a Conn Smythe worthy performance.

Sewn to the left shoulder of this gamer is the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic patch. These heavy mesh and knit Goodman made sweaters were built for combat, luckily! The game wear on this size 50 sweater is tremendous and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, reinforcement of the left sleeve cuff, a custom fight strap, gobs of inner pilling, overall trauma and abuse, washed out bloodstains and several team-sewn repairs. Shown above are some beautiful and historic photo matches of Nystrom wearing this exact jersey during the 1980 Stanley Cup Playoffs and Finals. Also shown above are some amazing video matches of Nystrom wearing this exact jersey during the 1980 Stanley Cup Playoffs and Finals. Copies of all photo and video matches will of course be provided to the winning bidder.

Bobby Nystrom scored the overtime Stanley Cup winner against Philadelphia on home ice in game 6 to give the Islanders their first Stanley Cup, thereby jumpstarting a dynasty. Before Bobby scored that historic goal, he netted one of near-importance, the double overtime winner in game 2 at the Aud in Buffalo during the Semi-Finals against Scotty Bowman’s Buffalo Sabres. This double overtime classic proved crucial to the Islanders and was scored while Nystrom wore this very jersey! Photo and video highlights are shown above. Nystrom’s 9 goals, 18 points and 50 PIMS in 20 playoff games didn’t quite earn him the Conn Smythe Trophy but darn near could have were it not for an unprecedented post season by Bryan Trottier. To any New York Islanders collector, a 1980 Olympic Patched gamer is considered the Holy Grail. This absolutely hammered photo and video matched example sports the highly coveted 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Patch, was worn throughout the entirety of the most important season in New York Islanders history, shows the battle scars of war and easily ranks as one of the finest and most important New York Islanders game worn jerseys extant, choice!
