1978 WHA All Star Bobby Hull - Serge Bernier Letter
Lot #5

It is with great pleasure that we are able to bring to the hobby this game worn jersey direct from the personal collection of Serge Bernier. A letter from Mr. Bernier will accompany your purchase.

As stated in Mr. Bernier’s letter, following the WHA All Star game, Bobby Hull, as a token of their friendship, handed this jersey to Mr. Bernier. Mr. Bernier has had it in his possession ever since.

This blue mesh gamer by Cosby was worn by Bobby Hull during the 1978 WHA All Star game. In a prominent list, which ranks the Top 50 players in WHA history Bobby Hull was voted a resounding #1. This is something that nobody would argue. The publicity surrounding the signing of Bobby Hull by the WHA’s Winnipeg franchise was enough to lift an entire league to respectability. During the 1977-78 season, which was Bobby’s last in the league, he registered 46 goals, 71 assists and 117 points, which marked one of his greatest individual seasons in professional hockey while also leading the Jets to a league leading 102 points that season.

Bobby finished his NHL career with 610 goals, which is still good for 11th on the all-time list. He finished with 1170 NHL points, another lofty total in the sports history. After a 15-year NHL career as a member of the Chicago Black Hawks, Hull jumped to the WHA’s Winnipeg Jets where he spent the next 7 seasons. In those 7 seasons, Hull scored 303 goals and amassed 638 points in a mere 411 games played while in his mid to late 30’s. Hull played part of one more NHL season following the collapse of the WHA as a 40-year-old for both the Winnipeg Jets and Hartford Whalers.

His list of awards include being a (12) time 1st or 2nd team NHL All Star and a (5) time 1st or 2nd team WHA All Star. Bobby won (1) Stanley Cup, (1) Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States, (1) Lady Byng Trophy for the combination of sportsmanship and high ability, (3) Art Ross Trophies for leading the NHL in scoring, (2) Hart Memorial Trophies as NHL MVP and (2) Gary Davidson trophies as the WHA MVP. A professional career that includes over 900 goals and 1800 career points ranks The Golden Jet as one of Hockey’s all-time greats.

This mesh gamer shows surprisingly good game use for an All Star sweater. Around the area of the collar, as seen in the photo above, remains some light but evident sweat staining. In addition, there are some stick marks and board burns in the usual places. The player name Hull and his familiar number 9 are sewn onto the back and sleeves of this historic gamer. The Cosby and size tag remain sewn perfectly into the neck. This is clearly one of the more important All Star game jerseys one could place in their collection, as well as being one of the finest WHA gamers that exists. The combination of the impeccable provenance and the surprisingly nice game use will forever keep it as an identifiable cornerstone to build ones collection around.
