Description
1978 Gordie Roberts WHA New England Whalers Game Worn Jersey
Lot #25

This home white mesh gamer by Stall and Dean was worn by Gordie Roberts during the 1978 WHA season. The Montreal Canadiens selected Roberts in the 3rd round of the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft. This Detroit, MI native began his professional career in 1975-76 with the WHA’s New England Whalers where he played thru the fledgling leagues collapse in 1979. Gordie transferred with his teammates to the NHL and played with Hartford for parts of two seasons before joining the North Stars during their Stanley Cup Finals season of 1980-81. Roberts spent parts of 8 years wearing the Minnesota green and gold colors. He then went on to play for the Flyers, Blues, Penguins and Bruins before retiring in the 1990’s after 19 WHA/NHL seasons. Roberts played on the Penguins back to back Stanley Cup Championship teams of the early 1990’s. In just over 1400 games played between the WHA and NHL this hard nosed defenseman racked up in excess of 2000 PIMS.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer are the manufacturers, wash, size and year tagging. The game wear on this size 50 sweater is solid and consists of numerous stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, stitch pops, heavy inner pilling and more than a handful of team-sewn repairs that include reinforcement to the vintage crest and lettering. The original double garter style fight strap remains sewn to the inner verso while the lovable green and gold Whales adorn each shoulder. A terrific well-worn offering that is fresh to the hobby and was worn by this tough guy and former WHA All Star defenseman.
