1978-79 Yvon Cournoyer Canadiens Game Worn Jersey
Lot #9

This home white knit gamer by Maska was worn by Yvon Cournoyer during his final NHL season. The Roadrunner had an illustrious career spending all 16 of his seasons as a member of Les Habitants. Yvon became Montreal’s Team Captain upon the retirement of Henri Richard following the 1974-75 season. In all four of his seasons as team Captain, he guided his Canadien’s to 4 consecutive Stanley Cups which spanned 1975-76 thru 1978-79. This was a team considered by many to be hockey’s greatest all-time dynasty.

Cournoyer posted 428 career goals and was a member of 10 Stanley Cup winning squads in 16 years. His immense talent earned him four 2nd Team NHL All Star berths in addition to partaking in 6 NHL All Star games. Yvon was also the 1973 Conn Smythe winner as the playoffs Most Valuable Player.

Sewn proudly to the left breast of this beautiful Maska knit is the Captain’s “C”. On the front in blue sharpie is an autograph in Cournoyer’s own hand. Yvon suffered a career ending back injury after playing only 15 games in this his final season, leading one to conclude that this was likely the Roadrunner’s final gamer. Shown above is Cournoyer celebrating while wearing a double red logo’d Maska style jersey. The game wear is solid consisting of stick marks, board burns, plenty of recognizable Montreal Forum board paint transfer, inner pilling, un-repaired holes and in excess of a dozen team-sewn repairs. The repair work is all found along the lower hem of this gamer. This is where the training staff custom shortened the length of the body for the diminutive Cournoyer, and then literally sewed it back together. This is a fine example, worn during the season that earned the late 1970’s Montreal squad true dynasty status.
