Lot #194

GAMEWORNAUCTIONS.NET is pleased to bring this exciting collection of game worn enforcers, tough guys and instigators to the hobby exclusively thru our Fall 2018 Auction. These 11 NHL and minor league game worn jerseys have been held in a private collection since being purchased beginning nearly 20 years ago and have been out of hobby circulation ever since. Included in this group of legendary tough guys are some extremely difficult to find players and styles, most which are being offered at auction for the first time!

This road blue mesh gamer by Harval was worn by Ted Green during the 1978-79 WHA season, the final year of his career. “Terrible Ted” made his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins in 1960-61. He would spend all 11 of his NHL seasons on the Boston blueline and in the role of enforcer helping the Big Bad Bruins live up to their nickname. Green’s name was twice engraved on the Stanley Cup from his time in Boston, 1970 and 1972. The first of those was at the bequest of his teammates, as Ted had suffered an on ice injury at the tail end of the 1969-70 preseason that left him near death. In one of the NHL’s worst ever stick-swinging incidents, Green and Maki engaged in an ugly duel, with Green emerging paralyzed while suffering a fractured skull. A lengthy rehab and heavy encouragement from his teammates helped Green recover. He shocked the hockey world by returning to the ice the following year and played the remainder of his career with a metal plate in his skull. Green was a 2-time NHL All Star and was named to the NHL’s 2nd All Star Team in 1969.

In 1972-73, having celebrated the Stanley Cup the previous spring, Green bolted to the upstart WHA and joined the local New England Whalers. Ted played in all 7 WHA seasons, spending the first 3 with the New England Whalers where he served as Team Captain. Ted then played his remaining 4 seasons alongside Bobby Hull and the Winnipeg Jets. Green won 3 Avco Cup Championships, one with the Whalers and two with the Jets. In a poll taken that rated the top 50 WHA players of all-time, “Terrible Ted” Green ranked 15th on that prestigious list. Green is also an honored member of the WHA Hall of Fame.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the alternate Captain’s “A”. Sewn into the collar is the size tag along with the heavily faded manufacturers tag. The game wear on this size XL sweater consists of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes and fine inner pilling. The original fight strap was removed and replaced by Green’s custom skate lace fight strap, which remains sewn in place to the back number. This sweater was the last of “Terrible Ted’s” Hall of Fame WHA career.
