Description
1978-79 Rod Langway Montreal Canadiens Prince of Wales Trophy – The Rod Langway Collection – Rod Langway Letter
Lot #701
It is with great pleasure that we bring to the hobby this Prince of Wales Trophy, which was given to Hall of Famer Rod Langway for the 1978-79 NHL season. A letter from Mr. Langway will accompany your purchase.

This 13” high Prince of Wales Trophy was presented to Rod Langway following the Canadiens victory over the Boston Bruins in 1978-79 Conference Semifinals. The top is made of plated silver and the base is wood. Langway was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens and Birmingham Bulls in the 1977 Entry NHL and WHA Drafts respectively. After 1 season in the WHA with the Bulls, he joined the Canadiens for the 1978-79 season and celebrated the Habs 4th consecutive Stanley Cup that spring. Langway played for the Canadiens for 4 years until a blockbuster trade brought him to the Washington Capitals to start the 1982-83 season. Langway was named Captain of the Capitals upon his arrival and kept that honor for the entire 11 years he played in the Nation’s Capitol. It was also no coincidence that, after not making the playoffs for the first 8 seasons of their existence, the Capitals made the playoffs for the entire 11-year stint Langway was with the team.

Rod was a 2-time Norris Trophy winner, twice a 1st or 2nd NHL All Star and played in 6 NHL All Star games. On the International stage, Rod represented the United States in the 1981, 1984 and 1987 Canada Cups as well as the Rendez-Vous ’87. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002.

This 13” Prince of Wales Trophy reads "H.R.H., Prince of Wales Trophy, Rod Langway" on one side, the other side reads "N.H.L. Champions, Monteal-Canadiens, 1978-79". The Prince of Wales trophy is awarded by the NHL to the players and staff of the Eastern Conference (formerly Prince of Wales Conference) playoff champions. The Canadiens would go on to defeat the New York Rangers in the Finals to take the Stanley Cup. This trophy was not as well preserved as Mr. Langway's Norris Trophy that is also being offered in this sale, the base has been reattached and the feathers at the top broken.
