1978-79 Marty Howe WHA New England Whalers Game Worn Jersey - Photo Match
Lot #14

This home white mesh gamer by Stall and Dean was worn by Marty Howe during the 1978-79 WHA season. The Montreal Canadiens selected Howe in the 3rd round of the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft. This native of Detroit, MI chose to join father Gordie and brother Mark in the WHA, where the trio debuted in 1973-74 with the Houston Aeros. Following 4 seasons in Houston, Marty and his esteemed family members joined the New England Whalers in 1977-78 where they remained through the remaining two WHA seasons and thru the transfer to become the NHL’s Hartford Whalers. Marty played a total of 449 games in the WHA over the course of 6 seasons. Though not as adept offensively as his father and brother, Marty did manage 4 consecutive double-digit goal seasons including a career best of 17 in 1976-77 from his position on the blueline. Other than a season with the Boston Bruins, Howe’s 6-year NHL career was spent with the Whalers in Hartford.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer are the manufacturers, wash, size and year tagging. Sewn to the shoulders are the beloved Pucky Whales. The intricately stitched harpoon dissects the tackle twill crest. The game wear on this size 50 sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes, trauma, stitch popping to the front collar and fine inner pilling. Marty Howe is spelled out with individually sewn on letters, directly applied to the upper verso as it should be. A few of the letters have experienced stitch pops at the lower section of the tackle twill. Shown above are some beautiful photo matches of Howe wearing this exact jersey during the 1978-79 WHA season. This fresh to the hobby photo matched offering is a piece of the game worn history of hockey’s royal family hailing from the final season of the WHA, choice!
