1978-79 Barry Long WHA All Star Game Game Worn Jersey - Photo Match
Lot #27

This white mesh WHA All Star gamer by Cosby was worn by Barry Long during the 3-game 1979 WHA All Star Game series against the Russians. Long began his NHL career in 1972-73 with the Los Angeles Kings where he spent a couple of years before bolting to the WHA’s Edmonton Oilers in 1974-75. Barry made his presence felt, netting 20 goals and adding 40 assists for 60 points to go along with 116 PIMS in his first WHA season. Long’s 5-year WHA career saw him play in 4 WHA All Star Games while also earning a pair of 2nd team WHA All Star selections. Barry spent a couple of years with the Oilers before joining the Winnipeg Jets early in the 1976-77 season. He would go on to the Avco Cup Finals in each of his 3 seasons in Winnipeg and walked away with the league’s final two Avco Cup Championships. When the WHA folded, Long found himself back in the NHL, playing a season with the Detroit Red Wings before returning to the Winnipeg Jets for his final two years. Long also went on to spend a few years behind the bench as the Jets Head Coach shortly after his playing days were complete.

The 1979 WHA All Star Game was a 3-game series that pitted the WHA’s finest against Moscow Dynamo. Headlining the WHA squad were Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky, Gordie and Mark Howe, Dave Keon and Mike Gartner. The games were played in early January 1979 in Edmonton, Alberta and the WHA won each of the hard-fought contests. This All Star series will forever go down in history as two of hockey’s all-time greats, Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe played on the same line. It was a dream fulfilled for #99 to have a chance to play alongside his boyhood idol, Gordie Howe. Gretzky led the team in scoring with 3 goals and 2 assists while Gordie added 3 assists himself.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the alternate Captain’s “A”. These striking red, white and blue jerseys featured cross over collars with sewn on lettering and numbering. The game wear on this size 52 sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, inner pilling and some team-sewn repair work at and around the front collar. Shown above is a beautiful photo match of Long wearing this exact jersey standing alongside his Winnipeg Jets brethren during the 1979 WHA All Star Game series. These jerseys have proven particularly elusive through the years, with this being the first we’ve seen publicly surface in more than a decade. In fact, this is the first time we’ve had the pleasure to bring one of these prized All Star gamers to auction and to our knowledge is just the 2nd such example that has appeared in a Major Auction. A beautiful photo matched offering, worn by this 4-time WHA All Star, showing nice game use and sporting the coveted letter of honor!
