1977 Oldrich Machac Team Czech World Championships – Gold Medal - IIHF HOF-99 - The Warren “Butch” Williams Collection – Butch Williams Letter
Lot #44

This spectacular Oldrich Machac CSSR gamer was acquired by Warren “Butch” Williams, while a member of Team USA during an exchange of jerseys at the 1977 World Championships in Vienna, Austria. A letter of provenance signed by former NHL and WHA winger Warren “Butch” Williams will accompany your purchase.

This white knit gamer was last worn by legendary Czech defenseman Oldrich Machac during the Gold Medal winning 1977 World Championships in Vienna, Austria. Machac first represented the CSSR in 1966 and he remained with the Czech National Team until 1978. During that time Oldrich never missed a major tournament, playing in 293 National Team games for Czechoslovakia, which is the second highest total of all-time. Machac was a 15-time Medalist for the feared CSSR team that valiantly challenged the USSR and Canada for hockey supremacy in the late 1960’s and throughout the 1970’s. Oldrich played in 11 World Championships spanning 1967-78 and captured 10 Medals including three Gold Medals in the process. Also on his resume are three Olympic Medals, two Silver Medals and a Bronze Medal that were earned in 1968, 1972 and 1976. This international legend was elected to the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1999.

Nice even game wear exists on this vintage sweater with its original tie-string still intact that includes stick marks, un-repaired holes, trauma, pilling, stitch pops and loosening to some of the lettering on the upper verso along with a bunch of thickly stitched team-sewn repair work to reinforce the back player number. This fragile old-school jersey is a reminder of what budgetary constraints and life were really like during the Cold War Era. Machac last wore this jersey during the 1977 World Championships as the CSSR won back-to-back World Championship Gold Medals for the first time in their storied history.

Butch Williams also represented Team USA during the 1976 Canada Cup and attempted to trade jerseys with a number of European stars while at the 1976 tournament. That was when Butch first approached Machac about completing a jersey swap. Machac of course would famously exchange his red jersey with Bobby Orr after the Canada Cup Finale before swapping this white jersey with Butch months later at the 1977 World Championships! Therefore, we believe it’s possible that Machac wore this jersey during the 1976 Canada Cup, a tournament that saw the Czech’s finish runner up to Team Canada only months before winning Gold at the World Championships in Vienna. A tremendous piece of Cold War Era history, directly from the personal collection of Warren “Butch” Williams and last worn by this IIHF Hall of Famer during the 1977 World Championships in Vienna, Austria as the Czechs again captured Gold and retained world hockey supremacy in the process, choice!
