1977-78 Phil Esposito New York Rangers Game Worn Jersey
Lot #4

This road blue heavy mesh gamer by Cosby was worn by Phil Esposito during the 1977-78 NHL postseason and/or the 1978-79 NHL preseason. Esposito made his NHL debut in 1963-64 with the Chicago Blackhawks where he played for four years before joining the Boston Bruins in 1967-68, in what was one of the most lopsided trades in NHL history. Phil spent parts of 9 seasons with Boston, where he rewrote the record books on his way to three Stanley Cup Finals appearances and a pair of Stanley Cup Championships. Esposito played his last 6 seasons on the grand stage of Broadway where he starred for the New York Rangers until his retirement in 1981.

This great center iceman was one of the most prolific scorers in league history, retiring with 717 Goals, 873 Assists and 1590 Points. He held the single season Goals and Points records until Wayne Gretzky laid claim to them in the 1980’s. It was 1970-71 when the defending Stanley Cup Champion Bruins took to the ice and Phil put forth the greatest season the NHL had seen to date. He netted 76 Goals and an equal number of assists for a total of 152 Points, shattering the prior single season records. Esposito followed his 76 up with single season goal totals of 66, 55, 68 and 61 over the next four years. Esposito was a five-time winner of the Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s scoring leader. He won two Hart Memorial Trophies as the NHL’s MVP and also pocketed a couple of Lester B. Pearson Trophies as the NHL’s outstanding player.

Proudly sewn to the left breast of this gamer is the Captain’s “C”. Sewn into the collar are the Cosby, wash and size tagging. The game wear on this size 52 sweater consists of stick marks, board burns, un-repaired burn holes and inner pilling. All original are the loop style fight strap and the knit nameplate, which is sewn high atop the upper verso. As many of you may recall, back in the 1990’s we made a historic find of these New York Rangers Shield Style sets of mesh jerseys only to sell out of them in world record time. Many have still not resurfaced some 25 years later. This short-lived style was the final iteration of GM John Ferguson’s flawed vision from the mid 1970’s. The New York Rangers wore these mesh sweaters during their 1977-78 playoff series against the Buffalo Sabres and then again during the 1978-79 preseason. To this day these jerseys remain coveted by Rangers fans and vintage style collectors alike. This wonderful Hall of Fame quality example would become an instant cornerstone in any serious vintage collection, choice!
