This road black mesh gamer by Russell Athletic and Koch Sporting Goods was worn by goaltender Ernie Wakely during the 1977-78 WHA season. Ernie was both an NHL and WHA All Star during his career. In fact, it was during this season, 1978, that Ernie made his only WHA All Star appearance. He spent time with the Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues in the NHL before bolting for the WHA where he spent time with 5 different clubs over 7 seasons. In a poll taken of the 50 greatest WHA players of all time, Ernie Wakely ranked 17th on that prominent list.
This attractive black and gold game sweater shows typical goalie wear. Sewn perfectly into the collar are the Russell Athletic and Koch Sporting Goods tags, which are a treat. The original nameplate, with sewn on lettering, sits high between the shoulder blades. This is a flawless example of a jersey worn by this very highly thought of All Star goalie, who was among the best to don a sweater in the WHA.
