It’s been nearly 14 years since we brought the personal collection of Montreal Canadiens Hall of Famer Steve Shutt to the hobby. It is with great pleasure that we again are able to present Steves Shutt’s 1976 Canada Cup game worn jersey. A letter from Steve Shutt will accompany your purchase.
This red knit gamer by Athletic Knit was worn by Steve Shutt while representing Team Canada during the 1976 Canada Cup. The Montreal Canadiens made Shutt the 4th overall pick in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. Shutt enjoyed a storied career that spanned 13 seasons, all but one partial year being spent with the Montreal Canadiens. Shutt joined the Canadiens in 1972-73, where he won his first of 5 Stanley Cup Rings. Shutt spent the majority of his career on the Left Wing playing alongside NHL legend Guy Lafleur. Together the two dominated and helped the late 1970’s Canadiens teams to dynasty status. Shutt netted 424 goals and 817 points in a 930 game career. His single season best came in 1976-77, when Shutt registered 60 goals becoming one of the first players in NHL history to accomplish that feat. Shutt was 3-times a 1st or 2nd Team NHL All Star who also played in several NHL All Star games. He was also a key figure on the victorious 1976 Canada Cup team while representing Team Canada and his 1993 Hall of Fame induction was never in doubt.
The game wear on this size 44 sweater consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer and inner pilling. The 1976 Canada Cup was a critical international series that showcased perhaps the greatest talent pool to ever play together, before or since. Team Canada, as they had in ‘72, once again showed their superiority by defeating the arch rival Soviet Union in the Semi-Final round and then knocking off the surprising Czech team which featured the Stastny brothers in the Final round. Playing together for Team Canada ‘76 were the following all-time greats: Orr, Potvin, Robinson, Lapointe, Savard, Esposito, Hull, Lafleur, Perreault, McDonald, Dionne, Clarke, Barber, Shutt, Sittler, Cheevers and Vachon among others. It was like a who’s who of Hall of Fame legends, a place where Shutt comfortably fit right in. It has now been 40 years since this historic tournament took place. Team Canada went on to win the Canada Cup on an overtime thriller as nearly half of Canada’s population was glued to their TV sets, making it the most watched television event in Canadian history to date! Shutt wore this amazing piece of Team Canada history during the 1976 Canada Cup, including the Semi-Final game against the Soviet Union and in Game 1 of the Finals against the Czechs! This important offering originated from the personal collection of this 5-time Stanley Cup Champion and is ready to be added to your Team Canada Wall of Fame, choice!
