1976 Doug Palazzari Team USA Canada Cup Game Worn Jersey
Lot #50

This heavy blue knit gamer by Wilson and Gunzo’s was worn by Doug Palazzari during the 1976 Canada Cup. After playing his college hockey at Colorado College, this Eveleth, MN native made his NHL debut in 1974-75 with the St. Louis Blues. Palazzari spent all four years of his NHL career with the Blues while also playing primarily in the CHL where he won a pair of Tommy Ivan Trophies as the CHL league MVP as well as a Phil Esposito Trophy as the CHL’s scoring leader. On the international stage, Palazzari represented Team USA in the World Championships and the 1976 Canada Cup.

Sewn into the collar of this gamer are the Wilson and Gunzo’s tagging. A third collar tag labeled “SHORT” is affixed just beneath the Wilson tag. Sewn into the hem is the chain stitched “76” year tag. The spectacular chain stitched American Bald Eagle crest prominently features the USA’s patriotic red, white and blue colors. All of the lettering, numbering and the 29 individual red stars that line the shoulders are all sewn on. The game wear on this size 42 short sweater consists of stick marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes and trauma and inner pilling. The 5’ 5” Palazzari, along with his 1976 USA Olympic teammates wore these beautiful heavy knit sweaters as pre-tournament action began in the summer of 1976. Complaints from the players about these jerseys being too heavy in the summer heat caused Team USA officials to order a replacement set of lighter screened on gamers that were made by Athletic Knit. Considered by the majority of hobbyists as the most attractive Team USA jersey ever, this beautiful example was worn during the inaugural Canada Cup and would make a tremendous addition to any collection of Team USA gamers.
