1976-77 Rusty Patenaude and 1977-78 Gary MacGregor WHA Edmonton Oilers Game Worn Jersey - Photo Match
Lot #27

This home white dureen gamer by Maska was first worn by Rusty Patenaude during the 1976-77 WHA season before being worn by Gary MacGregor during the 1977-78 WHA season. The Montreal Canadiens, 2nd round and Chicago Cougars, 10th overall battled for the rights to Gary MacGregor in the 1974 Amateur Drafts. The Cougars won out and MacGregor made his WHA debut in 1974-75 with Chicago. This Center spent five seasons in the WHA where he played for the Cougars, Spurs, Civics, Crusaders, Whalers, Racers and Oilers.

The Pittsburgh Penguins selected Rusty Patenaude in the 5th round of the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft. Rusty made his WHA debut in 1972-73 as an original member of the Alberta Oilers. Patenaude spent five full seasons in Edmonton before joining the Indianapolis Racers for one final year. Rusty led the Oilers in goals in 1975-76 when he put a career best 42 into the net.

The body of this gamer has been severely shortened and was worn this way by both Patenaude and MacGregor over the course of two seasons. The game wear on this sweater is tremendous and consists of stick and slash marks, board burns, board paint transfer, un-repaired burn holes, fine inner pilling and a massive number of team-sewn repairs with sew jobs found on the front, back and heavy clustered work on both sleeves. Shown above are some beautiful photo matches of both Patenaude and MacGregor wearing this exact jersey during the 1976-77 and 1977-78 seasons. A hammered photo matched example worn over the course of two WHA seasons!
