This road red dureen gamer by Wilson was worn by Serge Savard during the 1976-77 season and thru the time that he hoisted the Stanley Cup following the 1977 Stanley Cup Finals. Savard, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986, began his NHL career with Les Habiitants in 1967. He spent the first 15 seasons of a 17-year career with Montreal. During that time, which spanned in excess of 1000 games, Serge won 8 Stanley Cup championships and was victorious in two of the most important International series of all time, the 1972 Summit Series and the 1976 Canada Cup. He was the glue that held the Canadiens defense together and his stellar play was aptly recognized with 4 NHL All Star game berths. Serge was a 2nd team NHL All Star in 1979, a Conn Smythe Trophy winner as MVP of the playoffs in 1969 and was the recipient of the Bill Masterson trophy for the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey in 1979.
Savard served as backup Team Captain for the Canadien’s during the late 1970’s reign of Yvan Cournoyer. Following the Roadrunner’s retirement, Serge was named permanent Team Captain and served as such until leaving Montreal. There was perhaps no more important time that Savard wore the Captain’s “C” than during the 1977 playoffs. With the Roadrunner injured, Savard led the Canadiens to Stanley Cup glory, while wearing this very sweater. The Captain’s “C”, which sat proudly on the left breast, was removed and given to a healthy Cournoyer for the 1977-78 season.
Sewn into the collar is the Wilson manufacturer’s tag. Sewn into the hem is the 77 year tag. The game use on this striking dureen is solid with stick marks, many board burns, board paint transfer, fine pilling both inside and out, un-repaired burn holes and in excess of a dozen of those familiar Montreal Canadiens team-sewn repairs. Following the 1977 Stanley Cup victory, the Canadiens game jerseys had their nameplates stripped off by the training staff. Shown above is a video match of Savard wearing this exact jersey during the 1977 Stanley Cup winning celebration. Your best look at the match will come during the locker room segment while Savard stands alongside NHL president Clarence Campbell. A cluster of repair work and markings on Savard’s sleeve in the video matches 100% to this historic gamer, leaving no doubt that this was in fact the jersey that hoisted the 2nd of four straight Stanley Cups during what many consider to be hockey’s greatest dynasty. Here is a rare opportunity to own a true piece of cherished hockey history.
