1975-77 Mike Sleep WHA Phoenix Roadrunners Game Worn Jersey
Lot #29

This home white dureen gamer by Rawlings was worn by Mike Sleep likely during both the 1975-76 and 1976-77 WHA seasons. The New York Islanders and Phoenix Roadrunners each selected Sleep in their respective 1975 Amateur Drafts. Sleep’s junior career saw him play for the Flin Flon Bombers and New Westminster Bruins where he played in the Memorial Cup Finals in his final game in juniors. Sleep made his WHA debut in 1975-76 with the Phoenix Roadrunners and played in 9 games after being called up from Tucson in the CHL. Mike also spent the 1976-77 season with the Phoenix Roadrunners and played in 13 games after being called up from Oklahoma City in the CHL. After a total of two seasons and 22 games with Phoenix, Sleep’s WHA career came to an end.

This striking example was worn during the Roadrunners last WHA season. These gamers featured brilliant chain stitching on a tackle twill crest along with all sewn on lettering and numbering. Sewn into the collar of this gamer is the Rawlings manufacturers tag. The game wear on this size 48 sweater consists of stick marks, board burns and inner pilling. The all-original nameplate is a treat most worthy of mention as is the heavily customized fight strap. Considered among the most beautiful of all of the WHA gamers, these heavy weight dureens are always in demand amongst collectors and have been a rather tough find of late. This example is actually the first home white Phoenix WHA jersey that we’ve ever had the pleasure to bring to auction, and just our second Roadrunners ever. A stunning all-original dureen that features fabulous vibrant colors that would brighten up any WHA collection of gamers, choice!
